Though the Bible may present some conflicting statements on debt, it seems clear that bankruptcy is not specifically declared a sin. In Deuteronomy, it is stated that, “At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts. And this is the form of the release: Every creditor who has lent anything to his neighbor shall release it; he shall not require it of his neighbor or his brother, because it is called the LORD’s release” (Deuteronomy 15:1-2). Also, the Bible does encourage people not to become a slave to their outstanding debts and find some way of dealing with them. Thus, bankruptcy being an option.
Both the books of Matthew and Luke include statements referencing how people should ask for the forgiveness of their debts as they forgive their debtors (Luke 11:4 and Matthew 6:12).
Forgiveness. Tolerance. Bettering your life. Helping others. These are just some of the teachings of the Bible that relate to debt and bankruptcy.
